Horses and Free Comics.

May 6, 2009

So on Saturday, me and the significant other were at a loss for things to do, and it occurred to us that it was the day of the Kentucky Derby. We were only two hours from where it is actually held, but actually going there Proper would've been something of a headache, so instead of hauling our asses to Louisville, we instead went somewhere a bit more local.

So collecting our stuff, we made our way to ... some town just across the border. Into Kentucky again (as you can see). Florence or something? But anyhow, we went to the Turfway Race Track, as you can see in the wall of pictures there, and did a bit of betting on horses. Someone really likes horses, so I figured what could it hurt? It's only a few bucks anyway.

The fact that someone else is not writing this for me as I dictate should indicate to you that I did not, in fact, win big. Or at all. But what do I know about horses? Not much. I mean I know that you can bet on a horse race that is not even going on where you are located (hence the disused stretch of track there at Turfway), or that you can wear a hat full of horses.

But actual knowledge about horses? I know they're big and surly, and that's about as far as I got. But it was a pleasant afternoon, rife with people watching opportunities. And of course I brought the camera, 'cause I like to take pictures. I know I have not been giving you lot pictures lately, so I figured I would go ahead and do so. So here is a wall, a wall of photos.

Mind you, we didn't only hang out at the race track, sipping Mint Juleps and screaming at television monitors. No, for today was also Free Comic Book Day! To this end, we went to a decent store - also in the town of Florence - called Comic Book World. They gave us a huge variety of freebies, even if most of the Marvel stuff was meh - or worse, a fucking catalog.

And though I fucked up my sleek and sexy sunglasses something fierce, I also got a bizarre photo of myself taken, as you can see there. I have to say the fellow actually had a pretty good costume; I like to mock the toggle switches and light bulbs but really, that's how it looked in the movie... so it's not a lousy likeness. That and he got to dress up as Darth Vader all day.

Bonus, right?
