Whither Thither Mister Fister?

January 4th, 2010

So I was talking about a book yesterday.

I'd written the first chapter a while ago, but I think it, on hindsight, sucks. And that's not just me being negative; I tried too hard to bend the plot around the reality of the situation I'd made. And that's all right; it's one of those writing lessons. If you're trying too hard to make something happen, maybe it's even more unrealistic than you think.

And that's not even considering the actual subject matter at hand.

For all none of you that have read my short fiction bits, you'll know I tend to write about super-heroic individuals. Not that I really write in a comic book style; my 'fights' are typically incredibly short and brutal. But I find the whole super-powered thing fascinating and a fun realm to explore, especially because the only novels in that milieux tend to be adaptations of movies. Or comics.

Also, your word of the day is 'milieux'. OH HO HO.

I tend to try and write how I imagine such people interacting in the 'real world' would occur, though being 'realistic' when you're writing about a guy who got flattened by a meteor back in '73, only to wake up in the modern day with super powers... is something of a stretch. Don't worry, I'm not about to give away the entire plot or anything, but I had to go that far to point out how I like to write.

It lessens the need for a suspension of belief if everything besides the freak seems realistic.

But anyway. I suppose I'll have to re-write the whole deal I've done so far. I don't have to throw it out entirely, but the actual fine details are a'changing. I figure that way I'll have to 'bend' things less to make them happen, which should at least stop one from stepping back and saying 'wtf'. Without the cutesy abbreviations which are apparently patented by IBM now.

No really.

I may try to work on that some this week. I was taking some time to try and iron out a few things in my head anyway, so it may be a good time to knuckle down and do a bit of writery. I'll keep you posted on that, though I'm not necessarily going to share it wif you yet. Don't get me wrong; I don't honestly expect to make any money off of this. It's just something I'm doing for 'fun' at the moment.

Though you never know.

Some people will publish anything.
